Integrated Solutions for Mobility and Urban Development

On 12 - 13 May, Riga City Council hosted the European Committee of the Regions’ Commission for Territorial Cohesion (COTER) and the international conference “Integrated Solutions for Mobility and Urban Development”. The events were attended by representatives of the local and regional municipalities from all the EU member states, research entities, academic and business representatives.

In the opening speech, Mr. Kaspars Gerhards, the Latvian Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development, stressed the important role of the local and regional authorities in the European policy making processes. The Minister indicated that one of the priorities of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is to assess the progress on the implementation of the territorial cohesion objective.
The event consisted from number of sessions, which could be listed here:

Session 1: Integrated mobility planning in functional urban areas
The first session discuss integrated approaches to urban mobility planning that aim at creating a sustainable urban transport system by comprehensively addressing all modes and forms of transport in the entire functional area of a city or urban agglomeration and embedding mobility planning into the broader concept of spatial planning and urban development.

Session 2: Innovative solutions for public transport in functional urban areas
The second session discusses best practice examples of innovative and cost-effective solutions for public transport in functional urban areas, including the use of alternative and eco-friendly fuels.

Session 3: Integrated solutions for urban development
The third session widen the scope beyond transport and discuss integrated solutions for urban development aiming at promoting quality of life for inhabitants, in particular in urban areas affected by outmigration and shrinking/ageing populations.

The event was visited by TTI representatives, who deal with ENDURANCE project. The meeting was interested from point of view of understanding current state of the use of ICT for mobility issues in Riga city. Also number of presentation was devoted to the development plans of Riga city taking into account mobility issues.
