Varna is the third largest city and administrative centre of the North East Planning Region of Bulgaria. Its location on the northern coast of the Black Sea, and rich natural resources make it one of the most famous resorts in Europe and the largest in the Black Sea region. Varna is a juncture between the Middle East and Western Europe. The region is crossed by EU transport corridor № VIII. This corridor connects Adriatic sea with the countries of the Black sea region and Russia.
Under the slogan "Coast of inspiration" Varna is a candidate for the prestigious title of "European Capital of Culture 2019". At the same time Municipality implements Varna Integrated Urban Transport Project and awaits that by implementing SUMP will build on the expected results of this project.
