Founded by the Greeks in the VIII century B.C. with the name of Zancle, Messina has a population of 241,997 inhabitants and one predominantly linear development along the coast. Located in the northeastern corner of Sicily and nearby to the Calabrian coast, the City overlooks the Strait of Messina with his great and important natural sickle-shapedharbor (from which the greek name Zancle). The current urban structure is related to the reconstruction of the city after the devastating earthquake of 1908.
