The urban area of Bari is characterized by a radial development, that branches off from the historic center and the nineteenth-century district (seat of almost totality of tertiary and commercial activities of the region) into three principal lines: one Along the North-West coast, in South-East direction and the last one to Southward. The Local Public Transport system is composed by a bus fleet and taxies, covering almost totality of the service, two lines of metro and the local railway service.

In 2009 the PUM of Bari (sustainable urban mobility plan) was approved which is aimed to manage the urban area and the network in a sustainable way.
