Ferrara is located in the Po Valley, 50 km north-east of Bologna and 5 km south of the river Po. It has an area of about 405 km2 and about 133,000 inhabitants.
It should be noted in this regard that there is a strong dispersion of the population for both the absolute value of the extension of the area and the presence of 40 population centers beyond the urban center, including 5 single entity with concentrations ranging between 1,500 and 4,500 inhabitants. The historic center of Ferrara is an UNESCO World Heritage as an example of a Renaissance town that has retained intact its historic center.
Ferrara is on the main railway line from Bologna to Padua and Venice, and it is close to the A13, connecting Bologna to Padua.
