Santo Tirso is located in the transition between the Metropolitan Area of Porto and the Ave Valley, which gives the municipality a unique role between these two strong urban concentrations.
The municipality is divided by the watershed of Ave, Vizela and Leça rivers. The East area is industrialized and densely populated; the South area is agricultural with concentrated population.
The improvement in the accessibility system provided inprovided in the last two decades has given Santo Tirso a major role, making it more attractive for the establishment of new enterprises and the location of residential areas of quality.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

Santo Tirso has a program of sustainable mobility for the city to address the issue of public transport, pedestrian and byciclebicycle circulation and universal accessibility.
The most significant project is the “Walk Margins of Ave” which has a pedestrian and byciclebicycle path on the right bank of the River Ave, about 2 km long, linking the historic centercentre of the city of Santo Tirso to Parque UrbanoUrban Park of de Rabada (Urban Park of Rabada), the more relevant infrastructuredinfrastructure green area in the city.
The municipality of Santo Tirso implemented in 1997 the Santo Tirso Urban Transport (TUST), providing the population an urban public transport network.
Under the Portugal 2020 framework, Sustainable Urban Mobility Action Plans are being developed for all the Intermunicipal Communities (NUT III). Santo Tirso is integrated in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Action Plan.
