Algarve is the southern most regional district in Portugal with a resident population of 451.005, a figure that escalates considerably considering that it's the main touristic destination within Portugal and is among the main European destinations. Mainly in the summer months, infrastructures and services have to be able to cater to a much larger demand than the one imposed by the resident population. There are no official numbers regarding this population fluctuation although there are some that give us o glimpse of the dimension of the fenomenon, such as the 3,6 milion visitors in 2014 (excludes vacation homes and touristic establishments other than hotels).
AMAL is the Intermunicipal Community for the Algarve Region.
