Palermo, capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Province of Palermo, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, rich in both history and artistic and cultural tradition. The city has a population of about 650,000 residents and has a transport system which in recent years has been subject to huge investments, aimed at the implementation of an efficient mass transit rail system (both tram and underground railway) and designed to answer today's demand of mobility. which is still very 'private car-oriented'.
