Judenburg is located in the State of Styria and is the regional capital of the district Murtal. With about 9.300 inhabitants on 13 km², it is densely populated. The city is an important trading centre for its surroundings, main shops, supermarkets, restaurants, bars and other facilities and services are situated in Judenburg. Due to the structural changes of the last decades, Judenburg is suffering from a decrease in population and, in particular, a migration of well-educated young adults. In the 1990s, the city started to intensify investments in sustainable urban transport. For example, they participated in services like the Citybus (inner city bus) or the Verkehrsverbund Aichfeld (Regional public transport association). In 2010, a new local transport plan was set up. Although the city made efforts in promoting sustainable transport, the traffic related emissions as well as the number of trips made by car were rising. However, the scope in which the city can act is limited, as they do not have the competences to act on all fields. Parts which they can influence are, for instance, the municipal fleet, the investment in Public Transport Infrastructure or the promotion of non-motorized transport.

Status of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan

Judenburg has a lot of experience with mobility projects. Within the ADVANCE project Judenburg has reviewed the existing local transport plan and developed a further set of actions to be implemented in the coming years. It was a good tool to evaluate the already existing mobility concept together with external experts.
