We would like to remind you that early registration for the European Conference on Mobility Management (ECOMM) in Lund, Sweden is still possible till April 1st. To give an opportunity for those who have not yet fully discovered the potential of the MM concept ECOMM 2007 offers an introduction course. Granada: international centre of urban studies
 
As responsible partner for The Nature of the Problem Report, much of Granada's work in 2006 culminated in the recommendations to ASTUTE partners of how best to achieve measurable modal shift, such as:
  • effective implementation of current strategies and policies
  • the promotion of bicycle and pedestrian mobility as practical alternatives
  • creation of interconnected pedestrian areas in cities
  • road safety education at schools and driving schools
  • citizen awareness campaigns
Granada's launch brought together stakeholders from local and regional authorities, tourism, the Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation.

Study tours and staff exchange in new member states
 
The PIMMS-project (Partner Initiatives for the development of Mobility Management Services) is offering 16 visits to study best practice in mobility management.
The project has recently received extra funding, and can now offer Study Tours and Staff Exchanges to any municipality from any of the 12 new Member States. The visits must be to one of the PIMMS partners (Bromley in the UK, Graz in Austria, Stockholm in Sweden, Serres in Greece, Terrassa in Spain, Treviso in Italy, Almada in Portugal and Frankfurt in Germany). Financial assistance is available for some of the visits. A total of 16 visits are "on offer".

PIMMS involves eight cities from different EU member states. Their aim is to increase the use of mobility management in the regions of Europe. To do this they have assembled a database of best practice in Europe to identify their "Critical Success Factors". The core of the work is a structured programme of Study Tours and Staff Exchanges. These visits are carefully prepared so that the visitor's key decision-makers (politicians, administrators or technicians, as appropriate) have the chance to understand why their 'host' has succeeded and how this success can be replicated back home.

Applications close on 30-April. Applications will be selected on their merits, and we will issue our decisions by 18-May. Visits must be completed by 30-September.

Gouda is becoming a 'slow city'
 
By the year 2020 the Dutch city Gouda will become a 'slow city' where car traffic is an exception. Pedestrians and cyclists will have all space to themselves on the avenues and boulevards of Gouda.

The share of bicycle traffic in Gouda is now 25,8% which is relatively high in comparison with urbanised areas in the south of Holland, but just below the Dutch average of 26%. In their memorandum 'Gouda better pedal faster' with plans for 2015, the city is already quite ambitious. The new mobility plan for 2020 even increases the number of priority measures for 'slow traffic'. All non motorised modes will have priority in the inner city by 2020. All motorised traffic will have to adjust their speed.

To tide over the period before 2015 and 2020, the city will construct parallel roads for cyclists as a temporary measure.

The new Velo-city 2007 conference is approaching fast. From 12-15 June 2007 at the Gasteig conference centre in Munich, at great pace, the organisers will welcome you.
The full conference programme for Velo-city 2007 is now available at www.velo-city2007.com. As you will see, the programme is filled with presentations of experts who proposed innovative and exciting themes relating to bicycle transport. Alongside a high number of plenaries, work-shops and poster presentations, the conference programme is supplemented by eight different technical excursions.

OPTIMUM2 network meeting in Lille (France)
 
On April 13th the OPTIMUM2 project organises a new Network meeting. The Network meeting Is an opportunity to discuss the most significant trends in mobility management with several experts and is free of charge.

The meeting will take place at the Lille Grand Palais in the centre of the second largest French city. The meeting will start with breakfast and an introductory speech by Professor Phil Goodwin. Professor Goodwin is an expert on congestion reduction policies and changing travel behaviour.
Sessions will be organised on finding solutions to local challenges, others will focus on Travel Planning, Mobility Cards, marketing transport alternatives and accessibility during major road constructions.

León (ES) winner of the European Mobility Week Award 2007
 
The Spanish city of LEÓN has become the first Spanish city winning the European Mobility Week (EMW) award. The award was presented by the European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas on 7th February, in the framework of a workshop held at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels. The international jury of the EMW considered the initiatives of León as the best contribution of last year's EMW.
The permanent measures adopted in connection with the EMW include an information centre on renewable energy and energy efficiency, a cycle route linking the university campus to other parts of the city, an online information service on urban transport and new facilities for disabled people. These measures complement the strategy of the city of León, which includes actions to pedestrianise the historic city centre and the main commercial areas, as well as the improvement of the efficiency and attractiveness of the public transport system and a special focus on the promotion of cycling as means of transport (a public bicycle scheme is currently being developed in León). This strategy has lead to a significant decrease in car usage in the city centre (29% since 2002) and a steady increase in public transport (17% from 2002 to 2006).
