State of the Art: 11 countries reported |
 |
For the first time at the ECOMM, there was a workshop on the State of the Art of Mobility Management in Europe. 11 experts from 11 Western European countries delivered 10-15 page reports on the State of the Art of Mobility Management in their countries, in this way providing a unique, up to date overview of the situation in Western Europe. The reports can all be downloaded here.
Next year, these papers will be updated (and also a bit more standardised) and completed with reports from other countries in Europe.
A superbrief resume can sum up the following:
- In the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden mobility management is institutionalised and wide spread
- In Italy and France it is partly institutionalised but not so wide spread
- In Germany, Austria and Switzerland it is wide spread but not so institutionalised
- In Denmark and Flanders the situation is mixed
- Portugal and Spain are more in a pioneer phase of mobility management
- The knowledge on other countries in Europe is feeble
The overall overview over the 11 countries as presented in the ECOMM State of the Art Workshop can be downloaded here (1.653 kByte). It contains a summarising slide on each country as well as some comparison tables and conclusions.
The consequences from this workshop were presented in the final session of the EPOMM, see above - and download here (222 kByte). Highlights:
- EPOMM will strife to achieve an even better ECOMM - more innovation, higher level involvement, more scientific quality
- EPOMM will strife to be the network of all European mobility management projects
- EPOMM will aim to set the European Reseach Agenda in mobility management, starting with a Research Task Force defining the major research needs
- EPOMM will have more influence in European Mobility Management Policy, a first result being a comment for the forthcoming Green Paper on Urban Transport (see below).

State of the Art: first results from MAX |
 |
MAX is the EU's latest framework research project on Mobility Management (MM) and Travel Awareness (TA) in transport. Four thematic work packages will link these topics to develop products of use to MM and TA practitioners:
- WP A New approaches and innovative campaigns in MM
- WP B Development of a predictive tool, based on a new behaviour change model
- WP C Linking MM to Quality management - leading to MM certification
- WP D Integrating planning and MM
More information is available on the MAX-website, an overview on MAX was also presented at the ECOMM. Download here (231 kByte).
The four work packages have each just produced their State of the Art reports, and they are available exclusively in this EPOMM newsletter. Go to this link

ECOMM London 2008 |
 |
The upcoming ECOMM 2008 will be in London. A brief presentation (held in Lund) on the ECOMM in London can be downloaded here (846 kByte).
London is a world city with enormous traffic problems and very interesting solutions.
- Caused by its projected population growth, there will be an increase of 5 million trips per day (a 15% increase) in the next 20 years. London aims to have all these extra trips supported by walking, cycling and public transport
- In 2012, London will host the Olympic Games. London aims to cover traffic to the Olympic locations mainly on sustainable modes
- London was the first big city to successfully introduce congestion charging, and it has recently extended this scheme
- London implements large scale mobility management, reflected for example in the aim that each school should have a travel plan by 2009
The programme of the next ECOMM is under development. However, it will aim for the higher quality as set down in the EPOMM ambitions (see above), and it will most probable contain the following topics
- Tourism and leisure
- Travel plans
- Innovations in marketing and promotion of mobility management
- New mobility management techniques
- Pricing techniques
Comments are welcome, please send them to EPOMM.
