ECOMM 2007 call for papers
 |
| |
|
The11th edition of the European Conference on Mobility Management (ECOMM) takes place in Lund (Sweden) from 9 till 11 May 2007.
The call for papers has opened now, papers can be submitted until 31st of December 2006.
Lund is the most advanced city in Sweden in terms of mobility management, it has the highest share of cycling of all Swedish cities.
It is very well accessible from Copenhagen airport via the gigantic Oeresund-bridge. The ECOMM in Lund expects to attract about
300 guests from all over Europe.
The overall theme of the conference is "the future and mobility management".
The future is uncertain, but some things are clear. Climate change starts to affect us all, oil will
be a scarce commodity. Inactivity, noise and emissions due to traffic influence our health. Is it possible
to predict future challenges today? Can we take the right decisions and actions for tomorrow? How could
Mobility Management help us solve these future challenges?
On the 9-11 of May, these questions will be discussed through 9 different themes with a focus on the challenge
for the future: health,
mobility culture,
growing regions,
shifting demographics,
workplace travel,
decision making & control measures,
research,
sustainable mobility as high status and
pioneering.
ECOMM2007 will have a renewed format with scenario workshops, seminars and open space presentations.
All papers and posters submitted to this conference will be peer reviewed by the International Programme
Committee and researchers at the University of Lund. Acceptance will be based on significance, quality and originality.
Preregistration is already possible here
The complete call for papers can be downloaded here
The provisional conference website is online, the new website will be online by end November.

Connecting the Elephant
 |
| |
|
SEA (Sustainable Energy Action) from London is working with residents in the quarters of
Elephant and Castle to run community street audits which look at improving walking and
cycling provision, public transport access, personal safety and the use of community
space and facilities for the diverse local population.
Artists and sustainable transport professionals work together in order to creatively
design appropriate solutions, such as walking buddy schemes; promoting walking as healthy
exercise; developing cycle lanes; and the creation of home zones (residential areas
where priority is given to pedestrians).
The first such audit that is being worked on is the
Green Garter
Route, a potential Green Walking Route
The aim is that by creating excitement and interest in the history of the area
with members of the different communities and through linking people together
with this route, barriers are broken down that divide people culturally and
walking and cycling along this route is increased.
For more information contact Helen Pearce.

City Quality in The Hague
|
| |
|
Within the European PILOT project best practices on sustainable urban transport
planning are collected. PILOT - Planning Integrated Local Transport - is a European
project, which will demonstrate the preparation of sustainable urban transport
plans (SUTP) in four European cities: Braila, Evora, Lancaster and Tallinn. To
develop tools, guidelines and recommendations best practices have been collected.
One of the inspiring examples can be found in The Netherlands
The Hague is improving the quality of the city by addressing spatial development
and traffic policy in an increasing coherent manner. This reflects in a choice for
accessibility next to viability, strong public transport, better use of existing
connections and the a tailor made approach for different city districts.
More information on the city quality of The Hague can be found on the website:

The Hague directly through Peter-Paul Oostveen;

Kids on board!

On November 10th, The city of Venice (Italy) and UITP organise a workshop on
communication addressing children in the public transport sector.
Communication is an increasing key task for local public transport stakeholders.
Growing attention is paid to communication activities in order to reinforce the
role of the sector in connection with the development of national and urban realities.
Consequently there is a need to dedicate specific events and reflect on the tools
and practices used by the sector to communicate about itself and convey its messages
to the public, users and local decision-makers.
This is the purpose of the second workshop on communication and local public
transport which is jointly promoted by UITP-EU Committee and the Italian Public
Transport Association ASSTRA. The topic for this year's workshop is communication
towards primary school pupils to convey sustainable mobility values and principles.
More information on the workshop and the full programm can be downloaded here.

PDU's get more important
 |
| |
|
In parallel with the best practice example of The Hague (NL), also inspiring examples on
sustainable urban planning can be found in France. In the European PILOT project,
examples have been uptaken from Lille and Lyon. Building upon the experience of these
examples
guidelines on sustainable urban transport plans in European regions and local
authorities will be proposed.
Sustainable Urban Planning Processes or PDU's (Plans de déplacements urbains) in France get more important every day.
The combination of the PDU legislation has provided the framework for the implementation of the plan
all over France. Lille is one of the largest Communautés Urbaines, with 85 municipalities attached.
The national authority has decentralized all competences related to local transport.
This decentralization has caused an interaction between the different decentralized authorities.
The Region has a strong involvement in the financing of investments in railway infrastructures.
